Fairway's centerpiece is genuinely rare for a bedroom suburb: the Shawnee Indian Mission, an 1840s state historic site whose brick mission buildings sit right among the residential streets, giving this square-mile town a preservation-minded character that shapes its holiday season too. Displays skew heritage-classic — candles in windows, greenery on doors, soft white along low rooflines, and above all lit trunks under the canopy, because in the City of Trees the oaks are the architecture. The Country Club Plaza is barely ten minutes away, and its century-old Thanksgiving-night lighting ceremony is when most Fairway blocks switch on. Two working realities define installs here. First, age: these houses turned eighty-plus, and their original fascia and trim can't absorb a stapler every winter, so reputable crews attach with removable clips at the gutter and shingle line exclusively. Second, compression: jobs are short, blocks are dense, and a crew can light several houses in a day — which is why neighbors often coordinate and why Fairway sometimes squeezes onto calendars after larger towns are full. The cold still rules the schedule: hard freezes reach Johnson County most years by the middle of November, so the hanging window is effectively late October through the first November weeks.

Everything in Fairway fits inside roughly one square mile, which changes the economics of lighting it. The stock dates to the town's late-1930s founding: low brick-and-frame houses with steep little front gables, shed dormers, and entry stoops, set close together on short curving blocks where a ladder rarely needs to extend past its second section. What towers instead is the urban forest — the nickname City of Trees is earned, and the oaks and elms arching over Belinder and the surrounding streets dwarf every roofline beneath them. An installer's day here looks different from the big-lot suburbs: three or four compact jobs back to back, minimal drive time between them, most of the skill spent tracing gable returns and dormer edges cleanly and deciding which giant trunk deserves the strand budget.
